Your executor is the person legally responsible for carrying out the wishes in your Will. They gather your assets, pay any debts and taxes, and distribute what’s left to your beneficiaries. It’s a serious role, and choosing the right person matters.

What does an executor actually do?

Applying for probate, valuing the estate, settling liabilities, dealing with HMRC, managing property sales, and distributing gifts in line with your Will. On a complex estate, it can be a year or more of work.

Who should you choose?

Someone organised, trustworthy and likely to outlive you. Many people choose a spouse, adult child or close friend. You can, and usually should, appoint two executors so there’s a backup.

Can you appoint a professional?

Yes. For larger or more complex estates, or where family dynamics are difficult, a professional executor can remove pressure from loved ones at what is already a hard time. We’re happy to discuss the options.
